A Place to Call Home: Ruth’s Journey to Hope

After a late-in-life divorce, Ruth came close to having to live in her car. Your compassion helped her find a safe home, and the strength to start over at age 57.

When her marriage ended, Ruth had to move out - but she struggled to find a home she could afford to rent on her wages as a cleaner.

Most places she looked at cost more than half of what she earned each month, leaving her with very little to live on. At 57 years old, she was too young for the aged pension.

Ruth couldn't see a way through. She was staying in budget accommodation, but savings were drying up. She thought she'd end up sleeping in her car.

Ruth is among the growing number of older Australians who are facing homelessness.

But thanks to you and other kind-hearted Mission Australia supporters, Ruth found help just in time.

Faye*, a Mission Australia case worker helped her search for suitable homes and fill out rental applications. Faye also regularly checked in and encouraged Ruth to stay hopeful. Finally, the breakthrough came! Ruth is now in her own home and determined to stay positive.

"I will keep soldiering on." Ruth
