Looking after shared spaces together

Whether you live in a unit, flat, or townhouse, common areas are for everyone. This factsheet explains how to keep shared spaces safe, clean, and welcoming for all tenants and visitors.

Clear spaces = safer homes

  • Keep these areas free of shoes, bikes, rubbish, and furniture
  • They must stay clear for emergencies
  • Report damage, hazards, or broken lights as soon as you can

Good parking = good neighbours

  • If your property includes parking, please follow the conditions of use.
  • Don’t block car spots
  • Car spaces should not be used for storage
  • Remind visitors to abide by parking rules

Shared care = nicer spaces

  • Keep bin areas clean and make sure rubbish goes into the bins only.
  • If you have a private garden, make sure plants don’t spread into shared areas
  • Children in common areas should be always supervised. Please check with your strata rules, as play may not be permitted in some shared spaces. Always ensure the area is left clean afterwards.

A little courtesy goes a long way

  • Be mindful of noise. Sound travels easily through shared walls, especially during evenings and early mornings.
  • Close doors gently to avoid disturbing neighbours.
